Harry Potter and the Super Crazy Fans

I used to think that the fanaticism associated with movie actors or characters was a unique feature of South Indian cinema. Every time a new movie of Super Star err Megastar Chiranjeevi releases the newspapers next day carry stories about fans attempting suicide since they could not procure tickets to the movie! But a hardcore Harry Potter fan in the Philippines has proved me wrong.

A fellow blogger on WordPress, Martin Aquino, posted about the girl who committed suicide after reading a fake transcript of the latest book “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows” in which Harry and his friends die in the end. Unable to take the shock she locked herself into her room and later hanged herself to death. My first reaction was of shock and later anger. It’s really sad that these things happen, what’s sadder is that parents tend to ignore all the signs of such actions in their children.

    Who is to blame?

The Author, for writing such books?? No! The leaker who put up a fraudulent piece on the web?? No! Parents, who failed to keep a watchful eye?? No!

I’m afraid the girl herself is to blame…for having taken such a trivial thing to heart!

Well, how much sense do you expect a teenager to have? That’s the age when they are the most vulnerable I feel…hence the parents have to be very careful.

Blame no one. Parents should keep an eye on their children especially in their teens. $$$k these people who play such pranks especially when people are emotionally attached to the character.

The Guy who did leak out the ‘pranky’ spoiler would have done it just to gather eyeballs (or traffic or notoriety) but it was always supposed to be taken with pinch of salt. I don’t think he’d have put in a disclaimer but thats pretty obvious!

With her popular Harry Potter series, JK Rowling created a world rich with magic, suspense, terror and plenty of laughs as well. She did such a good job creating this world, it gave birth to an active and varied online community. Look up Harry Potter on the internet and you’ll find enough fan forums, RPGS and news sites to keep you busy for years to come. Each community is different, but they all have one thing in common: they’re wild about Harry. Being new to the world of Harry Potter, I decided to check out one of these communities ( and talk to them about how they found the series, what has made them such devoted fans and what they expect out of the final book of the series. This is what they had say…
