Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Maharani Mayawati, has banned the movie Aaja Nachle as the lyrics of its title track ‘offend’ the sentiments of the Dalits. But really, what could be more offending than calling yourself a dalit if it’s equality that you are fighting for? Any way, here are the offending words from the lyrics:
Mein ne galti kari thi
Meri nathni padi thi–2
Ki sone mein usko ranga gai
Mein ranga ke atariya pe aa gai
Mohalle mein kaise mara mar hai
Bole mochi bhi khud ko sonar hai
Here’s what the CM’s secretary, Shailesh Krishna, had to say about it:
…the film had been banned because there was an objectionable reference to a caste in its title song. “The reference to the caste is not only objectionable and humiliating but also unconstitutional and therefore the screening of the film has been banned in Uttar Pradesh,” he said.
What this essentially means is that calling a mochi (cobbler) a mochi and a sonar (goldsmith) a sonar is objectionable and hurts the respective mochi’s and sonar’s sentiments. So, be careful the next time you go to your near by cobbler or goldsmith. You have been warned.
